In 1956, a country club was built, offering members a variety of recreational activities such as golf, swimming, fishing, boating, water skiing, tobogganing, ice skating, snowmobiling, tennis, and fine dining. The surrounding subdivision was platted in 1959, and construction of the properties began.
Lake Wee-Ma-Tuk is a 154-acre lake located west of Canton, Illinois. The lake was originally developed by Harold Truax, a partner in the Truax-Tracer Mining Company, who felt a responsibility to restore the land after coal strip mining. By 1935, he began leveling the landscape and stocking ponds with fish. His son, Glenn Truax, later developed the area into what he called Wee-Ma-Tuk Hills, meaning “Blue Skies, Many Waters, and Hills.”

The property has changed hands several times since its original development. In 1996, Golf Partners, Inc. took ownership of the golf course and country club, while the swimming beach and boat ramp were sold to them along with covenant provisions ensuring the ramp’s continued availability for use by country club members and subdivision property owners.
In 2005, Hickory Lane Developers purchased the swimming beach and boat ramp with the intent to improve the area. The terms of the sale included maintaining the original covenant provisions, ensuring that the boat ramp remains available to Wee-Ma-Tuk Country Club members and property owners in the subdivision.
Hickory Lane Developers have made several improvements to the property, helping to preserve and enhance this beautiful asset for the community.
